Now California may have a Republican governor, but it is leading the pack when it comes to stem cell research. California has been able to push aside the dogmatic, religious arguments against stem cell research that our dear president seems to be so fond of and has awarded another $271 million in grants to build 12 stem cell research centers, as part of its stem cell program which is set to spend up to $3 billion over a decade.
The universities and research institutes that are receiving the money have said they would spend an additional $560 million on the laboratory construction, money they are trying to raise from donations. The resulting total of $831 million would add nearly 800,000 square feet of research space to house 2,200 scientists.
A big standing ovation is due to the people of California who voted and approved the program a few years back.
